After the connection broke, Lyra fell back into the chair she’d been sitting in. She let out an exasperated exhale, feeling the pain of the collision in her lower back.

Lema was no longer standing either. She’d been thrown back and tossed on the floor. Her robe was tangled between her legs, trapping her within the silken fabric that bunched beneath her.

As reality set back in, Lyra tried to grasp at all the mental puzzle pieces now swimming in her mind. What she’d seen didn’t make sense. Or at least, not yet. They’d shared a vision—something she’d never known to happen between two witches before. Future Sight typically came to a witch individually, but their connection had triggered something, and Lema’s face now looked haunted.

Had she seen the same thing?

Lyra bent at the waist and rubbed her back, awkwardly trying to massage the soreness away, then she felt for the life in her stomach. A small pulse beneath her hand told her the child was alright.

She knew her next priority should be to see if Lema was alright. Losing her balance slightly, she stumbled over to where her sister lay on the floor. Lema was alert and casting wild eyes around the space, searching for something. As if she was trying to grasp for what she’d just seen and bring it back.

Heavy footfalls thudded into the room, and Lyra looked at the door to find Ryker standing battle ready, sword drawn and senses on high alert. Lyra softened and settled back onto her heels.

“Lema, are you alright?” she asked, gently shaking her sister’s shoulder.

But it wasn’t her sister that responded.

It was the queen.

With a voice darker than the deepest ocean, Lema Mansell raised her head and spoke directly to her general. “Take her.”
